ประวัติ

โรงภาพยนตร์สกาลา ตั้งอยู่ที่สยามสแควร์ซึ่งเป็นที่ดินของจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย โดยเริ่มให้เอกชนเช่าเพื่อการพัฒนาพื้นที่ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2505 เป็นต้นมา คุณพิสิฐ ตันสัจจา ซึ่งเป็นผู้เริ่มธุรกิจเครือเอเพ็กซ์ ได้เริ่มสร้างโรงภาพยนตร์ในบริเวณนั้นโดยมีโรงภาพยนตร์สยาม โรงภาพยนตร์ลิโด และโรงภาพยนตร์สกาลา ซึ่งก่อสร้างต่อเนื่องกันเป็นลำดับ โดยบริษัท เซาท์ อีสเอเซีย ก่อสร้าง จำกัด รับผิดชอบการก่อสร้างโรงภาพยนตร์สกาลานั้นสร้างเสร็จและเปิดให้บริการกับผู้ชมเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 31 ธันวาคม 2512 ด้วยภาพยนตร์ต่างประเทศเรื่องสองสิงห์ตะลุยศึก นำแสดงโดยจอห์น เวนย์ กับ ร็อค ฮัดสัน ต่อมาย่านสยามสแควร์ได้รับการพัฒนาเป็นแหล่งการค้าที่ได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากโดยเฉพาะสำหรับวัยรุ่น โรงภาพยนตร์ในเครือเอเพ็กซ์ก็เป็นตัวแทนของความบันเทิงในย่านนี้ ก่อนที่สื่ออย่างวิดิโอจะเข้ามาในเมืองไทย แม้ว่าต่อมาจะมีการสร้างโรงภาพยนตร์แบบต่างๆ ที่มีความทันสมัย แต่โรงภาพยนตร์สกาลาก็ยังคงรักษากลุ่มลูกค้าผู้ชมได้ไม่น้อย นอกจากโรงภาพยนตร์ที่อยู่ชั้นบนของตัวอาคาร เครือเอเพ็กซ์ก็ริเริ่มการใช้พื้นที่ชั้นล่างให้เป็นร้านค้าและร้านอาหารขนาดเล็กที่ตอบรับผู้ชมที่รอรอบภาพยนตร์ โรงภาพยนตร์สกาลา มีลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมโรงภาพยนตร์ ในรูปแบบสมัยใหม่ช่วงหลัง (Late Modernist) ผสมกับ การประดับลวดลายแบบอาร์ตเดโค (Art Deco) ด้านหน้าอาคารยกพื้นขึ้นสูงเปิดเป็นทางเข้า โดยใช้ลักษณะของซุ้มโค้ง ภายในชั้นบนที่เป็นทางเข้าชมภาพยนตร์มีลักษณะเป็นโครงสร้างทรงโค้งมีเสารองรับตามจุดต่างๆ เพดานระหว่างเสาประดับเป็นรูปคล้ายเฟือง ขนาดใหญ่ ซึงกลายเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะของโรงภาพยนตร์นี้ โรงภาพยนตร์สกาลาและเครือเอเพ็กซ์ได้ผ่านการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจของประเทศมาหลายรอบแล้วก็ยังคงอยู่ในสัญลักษณ์หนึ่งของสยามสแควร์ แม้จะผ่านเวลา 43 ปีมาแล้ว โรงภาพยนตร์สกาลายังคงความสวยงามในด้านสถาปัตยกรรม ยังคงเป็นที่กล่าวถึงมาจนทุกวันนี้

History

The Scala Theatre is located in Siam Square of which the area is owned by Chulalongkorn University. The private company has rented this area for development since 1962. Mr. Pisit Tansacha started the Apex Group’s business and built theaters in Siam Square that are the Siam, the Lido and the Scala under the responsibility of the South East Asian Construction Co. Ltd. The Scala was completed and opened to the audiences for the first time on31 December 1969 with a foreign film. The Siam Square has become very popular, especially for teenagers. Although many modern theaters have been built, the Scala still maintains many audiences. The theater is located on the top floor of the building while the space of the ground floor is used for shops and restaurants.

It has an architectural style of a theater in late modernist with the decoration in the Art Deco design. The front of the building is a high platform to open a space through the arch entrance. For the upper floor, the entrance into the theater has a curve structure supported by columns. The ceiling is decorated like a big gear wheel pattern, which becomes the identity of this theater.

The Scala Theatre and the Apex Group have gone through many changes in the economic cycle but still remain as a symbol of the Siam Square. Besides, the theater has preserved its beautiful architecture throughout 43 years.
