ประวัติ

กลุ่มอาคารบนถนนวานิชบำรุงตั้งอยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำสวี และสถานีรถไฟสวี เริ่มก่อสร้างโดยนายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน คหบดีชาวจีนจากเกาะไหหลำ มีการสร้างโรงสีข้าว โรงเลื่อย และห้องแถวไม้ในพื้นที่ ในปี พ.ศ.2466 นายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน ได้สร้างบ้านไม้สองชั้น เป็นบ้านหลังแรกบนถนนเส้นนี้ ส่วนห้องแถวไม้หลังเดิมต่อมาได้ใช้เป็นศาลเจ้าประจำตระกูล ในปี พ.ศ. 2468 เพื่อนบ้านของ นายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน ได้สร้างเรือนแถวไม้ 2 ชั้นขึ้นมา ซึ่งมีการปรับเปลี่ยนการใช้สอยหลายครั้ง โดยเป็นโรงเรียนสอนภาษาจีน สมาคมฌาปนกิจสงเคราะห์อำเภอสวี ปัจจุบันเป็นบ้านพักอาศัยโดยทายาทของนายบุ่นโหย่ง แซ่ด่าน หลังจากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2483 นายเนือง บุญสิทธิ์ คหบดีอีกท่านหนึ่งได้สร้างบ้านไม้ 2 ชั้น ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ตรงข้ามกับบ้านนายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน หลังจากการเสียชีวิตของนายเนือง บุญสิทธิ์ บ้านหลังนี้ก็ได้ตกทอดมาถึงบุตรสาวคนโตใช้เป็นที่พักอาศัยจนถึงปัจจุบัน ภายหลังการก่อสร้างบ้านหลังใหญ่เสร็จสิ้นลง นายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน ได้สร้างเรือนแถวไม้ 2 ชั้น ตลอดแนวสองฟากถนนเพื่อใช้เป็นบ้านเช่าพักอาศัยจนกลายเป็นตลาดร้านค้าที่สมบูรณ์แบบมากขึ้นเนื่องจากมีผู้คนอพยพเข้ามาทำมาหากินจนกลายเป็นชุมชนใหญ่ รวมทั้งบ้านหลังใหญ่ริมแม่น้ำสวี ซึ่งสร้างขึ้นเมื่อประมาณ 50 ปีที่ผ่านมา

การค้าขายบนถนนวานิชบำรุงเจริญเติบโตมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง มีการสร้างโรงภาพยนตร์และโรงไฟฟ้าเอกชนแห่งแรกและแห่งเดียวขึ้นในชุมชน จนเมื่อประมาณ 30 ปีที่ผ่านมา รัฐบาลได้ดำเนินการก่อสร้าง ปรับปรุงทางหลวงและถนนเดิม ให้แข็งแรงและเรียบขึ้น ทำให้การขนส่งสินค้าและการเดินทางระหว่างชุมชนโดยทางรถยนต์ได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้นด้วย และการเดินทางโดยทางเรือและทางรถไฟลดบทบาทลง อีกทั้งยังมีการสร้างศูนย์กลางทางเศรษฐกิจแห่งใหม่ที่อยู่ใกล้กับทางหลวงส่งผลให้การค้าขายบนถนนวานิชบำรุงค่อยๆ ซบเซาลง

กลุ่มอาคารบนถนนวานิชบำรุงก็ได้รับการดูแลรักษาเป็นอย่างดี ในปี พ.ศ. 2543 ชุมชนตลาดล่างก็ได้ถูกใช้เป็นสถานที่ถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ยุวชนทหารเปิดเทอมไปรบ ของผู้กำกับยุทธนา มุกดาสนิท ปัจจุบันกลุ่มอาคารบนถนนวานิชบำรุงถูกใช้เพื่อการพักอาศัยเพียงอย่างเดียว ประกอบด้วยบ้านเดี่ยวจำนวน 4 หลัง เรือนแถวไม้ 2 ชั้น จำนวน 59 คูหา ที่ว่างและ สิ่งปลูกสร้างอื่นๆ โดยทั้งหมดมีเจ้าของจำนวน 19 ราย ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นลูกหลานของนายมุตัน แซ่ฮุน ทั้งสิ้น

History

Located between Sawi River and Sawi Train Station, a group of buildings on Wanitbamrung Road was initially established by Mr.Mutan Sae-hun, a wealthy Chinese proprietor from Hainan Island. A rice mill, sawmill and wooden raw house were constructed at the outset and later in 1923 Mr.Mutan built the first wooden, two-storey house and the wooden raw houses became the holy family shrine. In 1925, his neighbor constructed two-storey wooden row house whose functions have been changed several times from Chinese Language School to Cremation Association of Amphoe Sawi and eventually served as a residence for Mr.Bunyong Sae-dan’s descendants. Later in 1940 another neighbor, Mr.Nueang Bunsit, built a two-storey wooden house right opposite to Mr.Mutan’s place and his oldest daughter has inherited and lived there ever since Mr.Nueang’s demise.

After the completion of his house, Mr.Mutan established 2-storey wooden row houses along both sides of Wanitbamrung Road in order to be served as rental residences but afterwards became a famous marketplace. Since a number of people migrated to the area, the community found itself rapidly expanding. The development includes a large-scale house built along Sawi River 50 years ago.

Trading on Wanitbamrung Road has continuously expanded over the years and thereemerged a cinema and the first private-owned power plant within the community. Roughly 30 years ago, the improvement of highways and roads executed by Thai government increased the popularity of freight and transportation by cars which hence lessened the importance of boats and trains. This change, along with the opening of new economic hub near the highway, resulted in the downward businesses on Wanitbamrung Road.

However, the group of buildings on Wanitbamrung Road has constantly been maintained by Mr. Mutan’s family to keep them in good condition. In 2000, this community was the setting for a Thai movie named “Yuwachonthahan Poetthoempairop” (Boys Will Be Boys - Boys Will Be Men) directed by Mr.Yutthana Mukdasanit. Nowadays the community comprised of 4 single houses, 59 2-storey wooden row houses, other buildings and uninhabited areas, mainly serve as residences owned by 19 proprietors, most of whom are the descendants of Mr. Mutan Sae - hun.
