ประวัติ

อาคารที่ทำการธนาคารนครหลวงไทย ที่ตั้งเด่น ณ หัวมมุมถนนภูเก็ตหลังนี้ เดิมสร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นที่ทำการธนาคารแสตนดาร์ดชาร์เตอร์ดตั้งแต่สมัยที่การทำเหมืองแร่ดีบุกรุ่งเรือง เนื่องจากพระยารัษฎานุประดิษฐ์มหิศรภักดี เจ้าเมืองภูเก็ต ได้ส่งเสริมให้บริษัทของชาติตะวันตกมาทำกิจการเหมืองดีบุก และกิจการเจริญก้าวหน้า ทำให้ทรัพย์สินของบริษัทต่างๆ มีมากขึ้น อีกทั้งการค้าขายในภูเก็ตยุคนั้นก็เฟื่องฟู พระยารัษฎาฯ จึงเห็นความจำเป็นของการจัดตั้งธนาคารและได้ชักชวนให้ธนาคารแสตนดาร์ดชาร์เตอร์ดในต่างประเทศมาตั้งสาขา โดยสร้างสำนักงานให้ในทำเลที่ดี พร้อมด้วยบ้านพักผู้จัดการและบ้านพักพนักงาน ธนาคารฯจึงได้เข้ามาดำเนินกิจการตั้งแต่พ.ศ.2454 – 2532 จากนั้น ธนาคารนครหลวงไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) ได้เข้ามาเช่าเพื่อดำเนินกิจการต่อมาตั้งแต่ช่วง พ.ศ. 2533 จนถึงปัจจุบัน

อาคารนี้เป็นอาคาร 2 ชั้น ก่อฮิฐฉาบปูน หลังคาปั้นหยา มีการตกแต่งผนังด้วยลวดลายปูนปั้น รูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมโคโลเนียลซึ่งมีการนำองค์ประกอบสถาปัตยกรรมแบบคลาสสิคมาใช้ และมีลักษณะเด่นของสถาปัตยกรรมเมืองภูเก็ตคือผนังชั้นล่างอยู่ลึกเข้าไปจากแนวเสานอกสุด ซึ่งเป็นแนวซุ้มโค้ง หรือที่เรียกว่า Arcade ทั้งนี้เพื่อประโยชน์ในการใช้เป็นทางเดินและกันแดดกันฝน เหมาะกับภูเก็ตที่มีฝนชุกตลอดปี

ตัวอาคารและส่วนประกอบอาคาร ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเป็นบางส่วนในปี พ.ศ. 2533 โดยธนาคารนครหลวงไทย จำกัด (มหาชน) อาทิ เปลี่ยนป้ายชื่อ ปรับปรุงทางเข้า เปลี่ยนสังกะสีชายคา และต่เติมด้านข้างอาคารเป็นตู้ฝาก-ถอนเงินด่วน

History

At the corner of Phuket Road in the centre of Phuket town stands an office of Siam City Bank Plc, a historic building which was originally built as an office for the Standard Chartered Bank during the prosperous years of tin mining. The business was pioneered by foreign companies under support and encouragement from Phraya Rasadanupradit Mahisaraphakdi, The Governor, therefore, contacted the Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore to open a branch in Phuket. An office building, as well as residences for the bank’s manager and staff was provided as incentives. Thus, the Standard Chartered Bank opened its branch in Phuket which proceeded during 1911 – 1989 AD. Afterwards the building has been let to the Siam City Bank Plc to be used as their branch office until the present day.

The building is 2-storey, brick masonry, with hipped roof. The architecture is Colonial style, with application of some Classic elements, decorated with stuccos. The front walls of the ground floor are set back behind an arcade, a distinguished characteristic of architecture in Phuket that serves as a shelter for pedestrians, which is a necessity for its rainy climate.

There have been minor alterations and additions to the building by the Siam City Bank in 1990, such as the signboard, entrance, some parts of the roof and a new ATM booth.
