ประวัติ

สถานเอกอัครราชทูตอังกฤษ  ตั้งอยู่ ณ ถนนวิทยุ บนที่ดินที่สถานกงสุลอังกฤษได้ซื้อจากนายเลิศ (พระยาภักดีนรเศรษฐ)  เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2465  จากนั้นก็ได้ดำเนินการออกแบบอาคารโดยนายดับเบิลยู. เอ. อาร์. วูด รองกงสุลเป็นผู้วางแนวทางในการออกแบบ และ The Bristish Minstry of Warks ประเทศอังกฤษ ออกแบบและรายละเอียด การก่อสร้างอาคารเริ่มในปี 2466  แล้วเสร็จในปี 2469 ในสมัยที่เซอร์ โรเบิร์ต เกรก  เป็นกงสุลใหญ่ ตัวอาคารเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมโคโลเนียลผังสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า มีมุขกลาง ที่จั่วมุขกลางประดับตราแผ่นดินของอังกฤษ ออกแบบโดยเน้นความโปร่งสบายด้วยหน้าต่างและช่องระบายอากาศ การตกแต่งเป็นปูนปั้นและไม้ฉลุ ภาพรวมดูสง่างาม มั่นคง และภูมิฐาน อาคารนี้ชั้นล่างใช้เป็นที่ทำการสถานเอกอัครราชทูต ชั้นบนเป็นบ้านพักเอกอัครราชทูต ซึ่งเป็นการใช้สอยที่สืบเนื่องมาตลอดตั้งแต่แรกสร้างอาคาร

History

The British Embassy is situated on Witthayu Road on the land that the British consulate bought from Nai Lert (Phraya Phakdinoraset) in 1992. Then Mr. W.A.R. Wood, Vice Consul, gave a design concept and general ideas to the British Ministry of Works who carried out the detailed design. Construction began in 1923, and completed in 1926, when Sir Robert Greg was the Consul General. The architecture is Colonial, rectangular-planned with a middle porch where the Emblem of England is emblished on the pediment. The building is well-ventilated by several windows and openings, and is decorated with wooden fretwork and stucco. The overall appearance is stately, resolute, and dignified. As for functions, the ground floor has been used as the embassy office and the upper floor has been the residence of the Ambassador, since its completion.
