Sim or Ordination Hall at Wat Chaeng is a walled structure on high raised floor with an open porch at the front, Northeastern Thai architecture of Ubon School. Distinguished features are its beautiful proportion and fine decorative elements i.e. front pediment of woodcarvings which depict Erawan, the three-headed elephant of the God Indra flanked by two mythical lions, and lotus, symbol of Ubon Ratchathani. Although its roof style and decorations indicate the Lan Chang (Laos) influences, the solid, simple form and details such as the crocodile-flanked staircase belong particularly to Northeastern, or Isan style.

Wat Chaeng was founded circa 1888 AD. by initation of Chao Ratchabut (Prince Nu Dam), one of Aya Si (The Four Authorities) who governed Ubon Ratchathani in those days. Sim, according to Phra Bai Dika Tha Kamalo, was constructed circa 1912 and has been registered as a National Monument since 1984.
