History

The Oriental Hotel, which ranks No.1 in Thailand and one of the best in the world, was founded circa 1870 AD. It is recorded that Mr. C Salje, a Danish sailor bought a hotel business from the previous owner, and later sold it to Mr. Hans Niels Andersen circa 1881. Mr. Andersen had the hotel renovated in 1885 when the Author’s Wing was built, and the hotel was officially opened on 9th May, 1887.

The Author’s Wing, the hotel’s historic building, is a Neoclassic architecture designed by Mr. S. Cardu, an Italian architec. It features a symmetrical plan with a middle porch that is accentuated by a fractable embellished with stucco depicting a rising sun, below which the name of the hotel is written. Windows are arched, decorated with wooden fretwork. The interior is furnished with Oriental style furniture. These are all integrated into an atmosphere of a weathy family home of olden days that feels both splendid and welcoming at the same time.

Through the past century, Oriental has undergobe its ups and downs, changes of owners, constructions and renovations. The hotel used to receive many of the world’s most distinguished personalities, as well as being used as the headquarter of the Japanese troop during the Second World War. Nevertheless, Author’s Wing still stands and serves with pride until today.
