History

National Discovery Museum Institute buliding was original the ministry of commerce, formerly called “The Department of Commerce and Statistical Forecasts”, was elevated to a ministry by King Rama VI on 20th August, 1920. The office building of the new ministry was designed and constructed the following year.

Located on the southern side of Wat Phra Chetuphon ,the Office of the Ministry of Commerce was constructed on the land formerly belonging to princes, the sons of King Rama III. The building was designed by Mr. Mario Tamagno, an Italian architect, in collaboration with Mr. Gollo, engineer, and Mr. Guadrelli, architect. Decorative elements were designed by Mr. Vittorio Novi, an Italian artist. This building, intentionally designed as an office building, is one of the first office buildings in Thailand. Construction began circa 1921 and completed in 1922. The architectural style is Classic Revival, with a distinctive application of colossal order. The building is a 3-storey, hipped roof, with a staircase hall in the middle, rusticated walls on ground floor, stucco mouldings and arches. The building had served as the ministry office building for over 70 years since its completion.

In 1989, the Ministry of Commerce moved to a new office in Tambon Bang Kra Sor, Nonthaburi. The former office building was deserted until the National Discovery Museum Institute (NDMI) was established in 2004. Recognizing the significance of the old building in terms of history, architecture, and setting, the NDMI had the building conserved and restored commencing in 2005 and open for the public in 2006.

The restoration concept was to study and conserve most of the building’s original features, with minor addition of new facilities and utilities i.e. electricalsystem, air conditioning system, elevators and toilets. The building is now an exhibition hall, wherein the principal exhibition content are the origins of people and cultures in Thailand and Southeast Asia. The area at the rear of the building, from which later period buildings and structures were removed, will be a site for a new exhibition hall and landscape development under the theme “Activity Ground for Learning”.
